Zumiez shares plunged over 14% after reporting fiscal second-quarter results that missed Wall Street's top- and bottom-line estimates, driven by ongoing softness in U.S. footwear and traffic levels, alongside a drastically reduced third-quarter outlook and planned store closures.
For the quarter ended August 1, 2026, according to Investing.com, the specialty retailer posted a net loss of $0.17 per share. That figure missed consensus estimates calling for a loss between $0.11 and $0.14 per share, highlighting persistent margin pressures across its domestic store network.
"Second quarter results came in below last year driven by weaker performance in the U.S., which was primarily driven by continued softness in footwear as well as lower traffic levels," management said in an earnings statement.
Net sales for the second quarter declined 2.5% year-over-year to $209 million, falling short of the roughly $213 million analyst forecast. The drop reflects sluggish mall foot traffic and specific category underperformance in footwear, which has historically been a high-margin driver for the youth-oriented apparel and equipment retailer.
Slashed Guidance and Third-Quarter Outlook
Compounding the disappointing quarterly prints, leadership issued a third-quarter forecast that trailed consensus expectations across all major financial metrics. Management guided third-quarter earnings per share to a range of $0.00 to $0.10, well below the $0.59 consensus estimate compiled by analysts.
Revenue for the third quarter is projected to land between $222 million and $226 million, compared with the $238 million consensus expectation. To gauge early momentum, the company reported that net sales through September 7, 2026, were running 4.3% below the prior-year period.
Store Closures and Footwear Headwinds
In response to shifting consumer behavior and mall traffic patterns, Zumiez plans to close approximately 16 stores during fiscal 2026. This footprint reduction is designed to eliminate underperforming locations as the retailer navigates prolonged weakness in discretionary spending among teen and young adult shoppers.
Retail analysts note that mall-based specialty chains face intensifying competition from digital-first platforms and shifting apparel trends. The combination of falling comparable-store sales, a widened net loss, and a steep cut to forward guidance highlights the challenges facing brick-and-mortar skate and streetwear retailers heading into the holiday shopping season.
