Yelp shares rose 1.58% to close at $21.28 on September 11, 2026, following the integration of OpenAI’s GPT-Live-1 model into its business-facing platforms. The move marks a strategic pivot to diversify revenue streams through AI services while the company manages challenges in its core advertising business.
"Powered by our reliable business data and frontier tech stack, Yelp Host’s value to restaurants is how it sounds and how deeply it understands each restaurant’s operations," said Akhil Kuduvalli Ramesh, Chief Product Officer at Yelp, in a statement.
Scaling Voice AI for Local Commerce
The integration of GPT-Live-1 into Yelp Host and Hatch enables full-duplex voice interactions. This technical capability allows the AI to manage natural human speech patterns, such as pauses, interruptions, and overlapping dialogue. Yelp Host, designed to manage restaurant reservations and inquiries, has processed more than 1 million calls since its launch in October 2025.
"Hatch is among the first platforms to integrate OpenAI’s GPT-Live-1, and we are delivering a new, more natural real-time voice AI experience for service businesses," said Chris Bache, CEO of Hatch.
Strategic Context and Revenue Diversification
Yelp’s reliance on traditional advertising revenue has faced pressure in recent quarters as local businesses seek efficient ways to manage customer interactions. By embedding AI into the operational workflows of restaurants and service-based businesses, Yelp is attempting to transition from a lead-generation platform to a provider of business infrastructure.
This shift is designed to increase the retention of the Yelp platform by providing tools that reduce labor costs and improve customer service performance. By automating high-volume tasks like call handling, the company aims to capture a larger share of the digital spend within the local services sector, moving away from the standard display-ad model that has historically defined its financial performance.
