UBS Global Research upgraded German energy utility E.ON to Buy from Neutral and raised its 12-month price target to €20.00 from €19.50, pointing to underappreciated growth in electricity distribution networks, according to an Investing.com report.
"In our view, Germany needs to strike a balance of affordable allowed WACC with the investment incentives required to deliver its grid expansion," said UBS analysts in a note regarding the rating change.
Grid Expansion and Regulated Asset Base
The upgrade is anchored on the anticipated growth of E.ON's infrastructure portfolio as Germany accelerates its energy transition. Power distribution networks are projected to account for approximately 93% of E.ON's German regulated asset base (RAB) by 2030.
To understand this mechanism, the regulated asset base represents the value of capital assets upon which a utility is permitted to earn a regulated rate of return. Allowed pre-tax returns on these power networks currently sit 115 to 160 basis points above proposed gas returns, providing a clear financial incentive for utilities to prioritize electricity grid investments over fossil gas infrastructure.
Financial Headroom and Capital Expenditure
Beyond basic asset valuation, UBS highlights substantial financial flexibility within the company's balance sheet. E.ON has identified €5 billion to €10 billion ($5.5 billion to $11 billion) in financial headroom.
Analysts expect these funds to be deployed directly into domestic power grid upgrades. This influx of capital could push E.ON's annual capital expenditure (capex) to €7.3 billion by 2029, supporting the extensive infrastructure required to handle decentralized renewable energy sources across Germany.
Earnings Projections Through 2030
The ramp-up in grid investments underpins stronger financial forecasts from the Swiss bank. UBS forecasts E.ON to deliver approximately 7% annual compound growth in adjusted EBITDA and earnings per share (EPS) over the 2025–2030 period, signaling sustained operational expansion as regulatory frameworks evolve to incentivize private capital in public utility networks.
