The Boring Company has closed a $3 billion Series D funding round led by the United Arab Emirates, pushing the tunneling startup's valuation to $23 billion and securing capital for international infrastructure projects.
"Defeating traffic is the ultimate boss battle. Even the most powerful humans in the world cannot defeat traffic," said Elon Musk, Chief Executive Officer, The Boring Company, in a statement regarding the raise.
The $23 billion valuation marks a roughly four-fold increase from the company's previous valuation of about $5.7 billion recorded during its 2022 funding round. The fresh capital infusion stands as one of the largest private venture rounds for an infrastructure technology firm, reflecting growing sovereign and institutional backing for underground transit systems.
Series D Investor Syndicate and Capital Allocation
Alongside the lead UAE-affiliated investment entities, the Series D round drew participation from a roster of venture capital and sovereign funds. Participating co-investors include:
- Sequoia Capital
- Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z)
- Temasek
- Valor Equity Partners
- Vy Capital
- Human Capital
- Shamal Holding
- Baron Capital
According to InsideEVs, the company has earmarked the $3 billion for hiring across engineering, operations, and production divisions. Funds will also accelerate research and development for the Prufrock tunnel-boring machine, a proprietary system designed to increase excavation speeds compared to traditional tunneling equipment.
Scaling Loop Projects in the US and Middle East
A central component of the funding agreement involves an extensive infrastructure commitment in the Middle East. According to Electrek, the UAE partnership includes plans to construct more than 150 kilometers, or over 93 miles, of underground transit infrastructure across the country. Construction on the initial Dubai Loop pilot project is slated to begin in late 2026.
The capital will simultaneously support ongoing domestic operations, including scaling the existing Vegas Loop beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center, as well as developing planned urban transit networks such as the Music City Loop in Nashville.
What Is at Stake for Urban Mobility Markets
The massive capital injection tests whether private underground transportation networks can scale globally to relieve surface congestion. By combining sovereign-backed mega-projects like the Dubai Loop with accelerated Prufrock machine development, The Boring Company is attempting to transition from localized entertainment center transit systems to municipal subway alternatives.
