Tesla is expanding its long-delayed Semi electric truck program into Europe, aiming to compete in a heavy-duty freight market where established rivals already offer battery-powered commercial vehicles.

Tesla plans to bring its Semi electric truck to the European market, disclosing detailed technical specifications and launch schedules at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover, Germany. According to a CNBC report, customer deliveries of the commercial vehicle are scheduled to commence next year.

Timeline and Project Delays

The European expansion arrives nearly a decade after Tesla initially unveiled the Semi in 2017. Initial production was originally scheduled for 2019, but those plans faced repeated delays as the company prioritized constrained battery-cell supplies for its high-volume passenger vehicle lines.

By entering the European freight market, Tesla targets a heavily regulated logistics sector that has increasingly embraced electrification. Competitors such as Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have already deployed heavy-duty electric trucks across major European transport corridors.

European Specifications and Charging

Tesla's German-language website outlines specific metrics for the European market version of the heavy-duty truck:

  • Range: Up to 550 km (342 miles) on a single charge
  • Weight: Approximately 9,100 kg without a trailer or cargo at a gross combination weight of 40 tons
  • Efficiency: Energy consumption of about 1 kWh per kilometer
  • Power Take-Off: Electric power take-off of up to 25 kW
  • Charging: Ability to recover about 60% of its range in 30 minutes utilizing an 800-kW Megacharger network

Market Valuation and Stock Performance

Ahead of the trade fair announcements, Tesla shares (TSLA) closed down 1.77% at $358.97 on September 14, 2026, according to Finnhub market data.

The broader deployment of the Semi in Europe tests whether Tesla can scale commercial manufacturing and service infrastructure overseas to challenge legacy European truck makers on their home turf.
