Commodity trading houses Mercuria Energy Group and Glencore Plc are competing for an agreement to operate and secure metal access at Venezuela's largest aluminum smelter, according to a Bloomberg report.
The discussions center on the Venalum smelter located in the state of Bolivar. While talks remain ongoing, the precise structure of any final agreement has not yet been finalized and no binding contract has been signed.
Partnering With Heeney Capital
In its pursuit of the asset, Mercuria is working alongside private mining investment firm Heeney Capital. This collaboration follows earlier trade arrangements between the Mercuria-Heeney partnership and the Venezuelan state.
The group has already secured several agreements to purchase Venezuelan bulk commodities and metals, including gold. These prior transactions highlight a broader return of major Western commodity traders to the country's industrial sector following the ouster of former leader Nicolas Maduro.
The Strategic Importance of Venalum
Venalum represents a key industrial asset within Venezuela's state-controlled mining and metals portfolio. Securing operating rights and metal off-take agreements would give major traders direct control over primary aluminum supply chains in the region.
For international trading houses, establishing positions in Venezuelan heavy industry marks a significant shift in operational strategy as political changes open access to resource reserves that had been largely isolated from Western markets for years.
