Arcus Biosciences shares are trending upward following an initiation of coverage by TD Cowen. The firm assigned a Buy rating based on the clinical potential of the company's investigational HIF-2α inhibitor, casdatifan, in treating renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Analysts noted that casdatifan has demonstrated a median progression-free survival (PFS) of 15.1 months in clinical trials. This result compares to the 5.6-month median PFS reported for the current market-leading inhibitor, Welireg.

"In October, a 15-month median progression-free survival for casdatifan plus cabozantinib in second-line treatment, a less than 20-30% primary progression rate for first-line casdatifan plus zimberelimab with or without ipilimumab, and a signal of overall survival benefit for casdatifan monotherapy would derisk Phase III trials and enable casdatifan to dominate across every line in the $10 billion-plus renal cell carcinoma market," said Tara Bancroft, analyst at TD Cowen, in a statement.

Clinical and Financial Performance

The outlook from TD Cowen follows Arcus Biosciences (NYSE: RCUS) efforts to grow its oncology operations. The company reported $41 million in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, which surpassed the Wall Street consensus estimate of $22 million.

As of the market close on September 18, 2026, Arcus Biosciences shares were priced at $25.24. The company's strategy focuses on the success of its HIF-2α inhibitor, a class of drugs designed to block the hypoxia-inducible factor 2-alpha protein, which is often overactive in clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

What Is at Stake in the RCC Market

The renal cell carcinoma market is valued at over $10 billion. Arcus aims to capture market share from established therapies by targeting a superior clinical profile. The transition of casdatifan into Phase III trials is a milestone for investors, as successful late-stage data would be required to validate the drug's efficacy and safety profile against the current standard of care.
