Saturn Metals is developing its Apollo Hill gold project as a low-complexity, high-scale operation. The company plans to begin construction in early 2028, with first ore stacking scheduled for the end of that year. Saturn Metals is currently advancing the project toward a definitive feasibility study to confirm its economic viability.
"We are looking at a very respectable all-in sustaining cost structure for the project as we move toward the next phase of development," management noted during the Resources Rising Stars conference.
Operational Methodology: Heap Leaching
Conventional gold mining operations rely on intensive grinding circuits to liberate gold from ore. Saturn Metals has designed Apollo Hill as a heap leach operation instead. This methodology involves crushing the ore and placing it on a lined pad, where a chemical solution is applied to dissolve the gold. By avoiding the energy-intensive grinding process, the company aims to reduce capital expenditure and operational complexity.
Economic Projections and Cash Flow
Saturn Metals estimates that the project will generate annual free cash flow of approximately $200 million once it reaches full production. These projections are based on a gold price assumption of $4,300 per ounce. The company uses this figure as a conservative benchmark for its long-term financial modeling.
What Is at Stake for Gold Development
The transition from exploration to construction is a milestone for junior mining companies. It requires moving from resource definition to securing the necessary capital and regulatory approvals. For Saturn Metals, the success of the Apollo Hill project depends on its ability to maintain its low-complexity extraction model while navigating the rising costs associated with large-scale mine development. The company's timeline remains contingent on the upcoming definitive feasibility study and the subsequent final investment decision.
