GoDaddy shares are facing downward pressure following an RBC Capital downgrade that highlights risks posed by generative AI to the company's core business model. The firm lowered its rating on the web-hosting provider from Outperform to Sector Perform, setting a price target of $95.
RBC analyst Brad Erickson pointed to a shift in how internet users interact with digital content. He noted that the rise of autonomous agents could erode the value of traditional website hosting.
"The internet is undergoing a structural shift away from static, publisher-driven pages toward a dynamic ecosystem of AI agents that configure outcomes in real time, a transition he believes directly threatens GoDaddy’s ability to monetize its traditional domain, web-hosting, and digital commerce offerings," said Brad Erickson, analyst at RBC Capital, in a note to clients.
Legal and Financial Headwinds
The company is also navigating a securities fraud class action lawsuit. The litigation centers on allegations regarding GoDaddy's historical customer acquisition strategy. Investors and parties involved in the case face a lead plaintiff deadline of October 20, 2026.
The market is looking toward the company's upcoming earnings report for clarity on how these pressures are impacting operations. GoDaddy is scheduled to release its Q3 2026 financial results on October 29, 2026.
Why This Matters for Web Infrastructure
GoDaddy has relied on the "do-it-yourself" web model, where businesses purchase domains and hosting space to build static sites. The concern raised by RBC is that if AI agents handle transactions, service bookings, and informational queries directly, the necessity for a traditional, standalone website may diminish. This transition threatens the recurring revenue streams that GoDaddy has built through its domain registration and site-builder platforms. The company must now demonstrate it can adjust its value proposition to remain relevant as digital interaction shifts toward AI agents.
