Qatar National Bank reported third-quarter 2026 earnings that exceeded analyst expectations, although the company lowered its full-year growth outlook due to margin pressures and rising provisions. The bank delivered a high quarterly performance, but the revised guidance caused market volatility as stakeholders evaluated the immediate results against a more cautious end-of-year forecast.

"In terms of margin trajectory, we expect that the margin for the full year would remain between 260-265 basis points," an executive stated regarding the bank's net interest margin outlook.

Quarterly Financial Performance

For the quarter ending September 30, 2026, Qatar National Bank reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.48, surpassing the $0.445 consensus forecast. Revenue for the period reached $11.75 billion, exceeding the $11.59 billion estimate according to an earnings transcript.

Despite these results, the bank adjusted its forward-looking projections downward. Management now expects full-year 2026 profitability growth to land between 4% and 6%, down from the previous target of 5% to 7%. Similarly, loan growth guidance was reduced to a range of 5% to 7%, compared to the earlier forecast of 6% to 8%.

Deposit Trends and Margin Pressures

The shift in guidance reflects challenges in balancing deposit costs and net interest margins. During the earnings call, executives addressed the changing composition of the bank's funding base, noting a return to traditional client behavior as international markets stabilize.

"In terms of deposits, Qatari versus non-Qatari deposits, what we have seen is that a return of our usual clients from our international operations, as things have normalized," an executive said regarding the bank's shifting deposit mix.

Why Guidance Matters for QNB

The downward revision in growth targets highlights economic pressures facing regional lenders, particularly as banks navigate the impact of rising provisions for credit losses. By lowering profitability and loan growth expectations, the bank indicates that the competitive interest rate environment may continue to compress net interest margins through the remainder of the fiscal year.

For investors, the contrast between the quarterly earnings beat and the tempered outlook provides a benchmark for how the bank is managing the trade-off between expansion and risk mitigation in the current banking environment.
