PepsiCo is struggling to meet performance targets established after Elliott Investment Management acquired a $4 billion stake. The company is facing shrinking North American volumes and the influence of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs on consumer behavior. The core operating margin for the first half of 2026 reached 16.3%, which is a 15-basis-point decline from the prior year. This result moves the firm further from its goal of a 100-basis-point margin expansion over three years, according to a Reuters report.
"They have not identified a focused path to recovery in the face of the changes that they've made. They were simply too late, and now they have the threat of GLP-1s," said Stephanie Link, chief investment strategist at Hightower Advisors, a firm that holds PepsiCo shares.
Financial Performance and Valuation
Despite operational headwinds, the company reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $2.34 per share, surpassing the $2.29 estimate projected by FactSet. The broader market valuation has contracted. PepsiCo's enterprise value has fallen to 10 times its EBITDA, a decline from the 18 times multiple it commanded in mid-2022.
As of October 12, 2026, PepsiCo shares are trading at $127.04, reflecting a 16% decline since Elliott Investment Management first disclosed its multibillion-dollar position. The stock's performance highlights a disconnect between quarterly earnings beats and investor confidence in the company’s long-term strategy.
Investor Expectations for Recovery
Market participants are focused on two indicators to gauge the company's turnaround potential: the ability to maintain beverage pricing power relative to competitors like Coca-Cola, and evidence that unit volumes and profit margins in the North American snack division have stabilized.
"Investors want two things: beverage pricing power that keeps pace with Coke, and signs that unit volumes and margins in North American snacks have stopped sliding," said David Wagner, head of equity and portfolio manager at Aptus Capital Advisors, which holds PepsiCo stock.
The GLP-1 Influence
The emergence of GLP-1 weight-loss medications has introduced a new variable for food and beverage conglomerates. Analysts are concerned that these drugs, which suppress appetite, could lead to a permanent shift in consumer demand for high-calorie snacks and sugary beverages. This change complicates the recovery path for legacy consumer goods companies that rely on high-volume sales of processed food products.
