National Vision is transforming its business model from a value retail chain into an integrated healthcare-linked vision care platform, targeting consistent operating margin expansion through 2030, according to presentations at the Barclays conference.
"We employ over 2,000 optometrists. Close to half of our customer base, I think it is like 42% now, use some form of insurance in their purchase journey with us," said Alex Wilkes, CEO, National Vision, in a statement at the conference. "That is a really fundamental difference from traditional retail, but it also makes us a lot more resilient."
Expanding Margins and Controlling Costs
The company has focused heavily on operational efficiency over the past two years to achieve its financial goals. According to a conference transcript on Investing.com, executive leadership detailed structural changes implemented across the enterprise.
"We have been very focused in the last two years on SG&A and cost out," said Chris Laden, CFO, National Vision, noting that savings were largely driven by home office optimization and professionalized procurement and sourcing processes.
National Vision finished 2024 with an operating margin of 3.5%. Management expects operating margins to expand by 50 to 150 basis points per year on average through 2030, with a specific objective to double operating margin dollars from 2024 levels by 2026.
Footprint and Market Context
The strategic shift comes as the company manages its physical and digital presence. National Vision currently operates just under 1,280 stores across 40 states, integrating brick-and-mortar retail with employed optometrists, e-commerce channels, and managed care relationships.
In the public markets, National Vision Holdings Inc (EYE) recently closed at $17.13, up 0.06% from its previous close of $17.12, according to Finnhub market data.
What Is at Stake for Vision Retailers
The pivot toward a healthcare-linked platform model reflects pressures within the optical retail sector to capture recurring revenue streams through managed care integrations. By pairing its nationwide store footprint with employed medical professionals and insurance processing, National Vision is attempting to insulate its business from discretionary spending volatility while scaling profitability.
