Morgan Stanley initiated coverage on First Horizon National with an Equalweight rating and a $30.00 price target, highlighting the regional bank's balance sheet valuation relative to its projected earnings growth. With First Horizon (NYSE:FHN) shares trading at $24.94 at the time of the announcement, the target points to modest upside as the lender navigates regional banking conditions.
First Horizon's fundamental performance has strengthened over recent quarters, driven by improved capital efficiency and margin performance. According to a report from Investing.com, the bank's return on tangible common equity rose from 12.5% in 2024 to 14.2% in 2025.
ROTCE Targets Met for Four Consecutive Quarters
The upward trend in profitability continued into 2026, with First Horizon posting a return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) of 15.3% in the second quarter. This result marked the fourth consecutive quarter that the bank met or exceeded its internal target of a 15% or higher ROTCE.
ROTCE is a key profitability metric for financial institutions because it measures how effectively a bank generates profits from the capital invested by its common shareholders, excluding intangible assets and goodwill. Consistently clearing the 15% threshold signals that the bank's core lending and fee-generating operations are producing strong returns despite fluctuating interest rate environments.
What an Equalweight Rating Signifies
In equity research terminology, an Equalweight rating indicates that an analyst expects a stock to perform in line with the broader market or the analyst's coverage universe over the next 12 to 18 months. Rather than signaling an aggressive buying or selling stance, the rating suggests that First Horizon's current valuation fairly reflects its near-term earnings potential and operational progress.
First Horizon operates primarily across the American South, serving commercial and retail customers through its regional banking network. The bank's ability to sustain higher profitability metrics while maintaining capital discipline remains a central focus for analysts assessing regional bank valuations in the current macroeconomic climate.
