Moody’s Ratings has affirmed Hyster-Yale Materials Handling’s Ba3 corporate family rating while revising its outlook to negative. The firm cited sustained high debt levels and sluggish cash flow projections through 2027. This shift reflects a cautious view on the company's ability to deleverage its balance sheet in the near term as it navigates a period of declining revenue.
Credit Rating Breakdown
In addition to the corporate family rating, Moody’s maintained several other key credit assessments for the industrial manufacturer:
- Ba3-PD: Probability of Default rating affirmed.
- Ba2: Backed senior secured bank credit facility rating affirmed.
- SGL-3: Speculative grade liquidity rating maintained.
The SGL-3 rating indicates that Moody’s views the company’s liquidity as adequate to meet its obligations over the next 12 months.
Financial Performance and Deleveraging Targets
This negative outlook revision is driven by Moody’s expectation that Hyster-Yale will maintain a moderately high debt-to-EBITDA ratio for the next several years. The firm projects that the company’s leverage will remain elevated before beginning a gradual descent.
According to the Moody’s report, debt-to-EBITDA is expected to decline to below 4.0x within the next 12 to 18 months. Further improvement, targeting a ratio below 3.0x, is not anticipated until after that period.
The company’s recent financial results highlight the scale of the challenge. For the twelve months ended June 30, 2026, Hyster-Yale reported revenue of $3.5 billion. This represents a contraction from the $4.3 billion in revenue the company reached in 2024.
What Credit Outlooks Mean for Borrowers
A credit outlook reflects the potential direction of a rating over the medium term. A negative outlook signifies that a rating agency identifies an increased risk of a downgrade if financial performance does not improve in line with expectations. For Hyster-Yale, the primary focus for analysts remains the company's ability to manage its debt load while operating in a revenue-constrained environment. The transition to a negative outlook signals that the agency is monitoring the company's cash flow generation, which is essential for servicing the debt currently held on its balance sheet.
