Montauk Renewables has officially opened a new facility in Turkey, North Carolina. This $200 million capital investment converts swine waste into electricity and biochar. The project expands the company’s renewable energy infrastructure by utilizing the region’s agricultural output to generate power and soil-enhancing byproducts.

"As of the end of August, we have entered into long-term agreements with over 80 separate farming locations, providing us access to more than 415,000 of the hog spaces we are targeting for our first phase of development," said Sean McClain, CEO of Montauk Renewables, in a statement.

Operational Scale and Farming Partnerships

The facility in Sampson County serves as a centralized processing hub for waste collected from contracted farms. By securing rights to over 415,000 hog spaces, Montauk Renewables has established a consistent feedstock supply for industrial energy production.

The facility also produces biochar, a carbon-rich material created through the thermal decomposition of organic waste. According to a company press release, this byproduct is intended for agricultural use to improve soil health.

"I am grateful that agriculture and agribusiness continue to invest and grow in North Carolina. Montauk’s capital investment is great news for Sampson County. This is good news for the pork producers, and the biochar produced here will improve nutrient and water retention, supporting healthier soil and stronger crop yields," said North Carolina Senator Brent Jackson.

Market Context and Financial Standing

The launch occurs as the company scales its renewable operations. As of September 18, 2026, shares of Montauk Renewables (MNTK) were priced at $2.25.

For the local agricultural sector, the integration of waste-to-energy technology provides an alternative management method for swine waste. By converting waste that would otherwise require traditional lagoon storage into sellable electricity and biochar, the project aligns industrial pork production with environmental and sustainability mandates.
