Meitu (HKG: 1357) shares fell 4.2% in trading today after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock from Buy to Neutral. Analysts pointed to concerns regarding the company's valuation and a longer timeline for AI-driven revenue growth than previously anticipated.
In a note to clients, Goldman Sachs slashed its price target for the image-editing software developer from HK$10.8 to HK$5.1. The firm indicated that the company remains a participant in the AI space, but current upside potential is insufficient compared to other market opportunities.
Valuation and Market Comparison
The downgrade highlights a gap between Meitu’s current market performance and the bank’s expectations for its Greater China Tech coverage. Goldman Sachs noted that Meitu’s projected 35% upside potential is uncompelling when measured against other Buy-rated companies in the sector, which currently average 96% upside potential.
Path to a Positive Outlook
Despite the downgrade to Neutral, the investment bank outlined specific performance benchmarks that could lead to a more constructive outlook on the stock. According to the research note, Goldman Sachs would reconsider its position if Meitu demonstrates:
- Accelerated Growth in Paying Ratios: Driven by increased overseas user penetration through localized product offerings.
- AI Product Expansion: The successful rollout of AI-powered image and video features.
- Category Diversification: Expansion into new software or service categories that broaden the company's revenue base.
Shareholders are focused on the company's ability to convert its AI-focused research and development into tangible, recurring subscription revenue. While Meitu has integrated generative AI tools into its suite of photo and video editing applications, investors are focused on whether these features can drive a sustained increase in the paying user base, rather than serving as a temporary engagement driver.
