Medtronic has received FDA clearance for its LigaSure RAS Maryland instrument. This device expands the utility of the company's Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system in the U.S. market. The approval supports the firm's effort to scale its robotic surgery portfolio, which is currently cleared for urologic procedures in the United States.

"Vessel sealing sits at the center of how surgeons work through the most demanding moments of a procedure, and surgeons have trusted LigaSure to do it across open and laparoscopic surgery for decades," said Dr. Matthew Kroh, chief medical officer within the Surgical business at Medtronic and a practicing surgeon.

Technical Capabilities and Clinical Utility

The newly cleared instrument seals and cuts vessels, lymphatics, and thick tissue up to 7 mm in diameter. A feature of the device is its efficiency, as it seals vessels in approximately two seconds.

This technology exists in the company's global operations. The LigaSure RAS Maryland instrument was introduced in European markets in 2025 following the receipt of the CE Mark. The U.S. clearance brings the robotic-integrated version of this tool to a market where Medtronic competes against other robotic surgery platforms.

Financial Context and Market Position

Medtronic (MDT) continues to integrate its Hugo system into hospital workflows to capture a larger share of the robotic-assisted surgery market. As of September 18, 2026, Medtronic stock was trading at $92.13.

For hospitals and surgical centers, the integration of specialized instruments like the LigaSure Maryland jaw helps transition from traditional manual laparoscopic techniques to robotic-assisted workflows. By utilizing existing vessel-sealing technology in a robotic format, the company aims to reduce the learning curve for surgeons transitioning to the Hugo platform, which may increase the adoption rate of the system for complex procedures.
