Lumen Technologies shares fell 2.3% to $6.488 compared with a previous close of $6.64 during the company's presentation at Citi's 2026 Global TMT Conference on September 9, 2026. The stock traded within a 52-week range of $5.45 to $11.95 as management detailed its ongoing reinvention into an AI networking platform.

"Everything is changing. The classic way of connecting and transporting is becoming digital and on-demand. Now we are really selling outcomes," said Kate Johnson, Chief Executive, Lumen Technologies, in a statement during the conference.

Strategic Revenue Growth and Financial Targets

The strategic shift toward digital connectivity is reflected in Lumen's financial performance. Strategic revenue now accounts for 53% of total revenue, marking a 14% year-over-year increase in the latest quarter according to conference transcripts.

The company anticipates positive revenue growth in its core business segment by 2028 and targets EBITDA growth for full-year 2026. These projections highlight management's efforts to stabilize cash flow and repair the corporate balance sheet following years of legacy revenue declines.

Fiber Footprint Expansion Plans

A core pillar of the AI networking pivot involves massive infrastructure scaling. Lumen plans to expand its fiber footprint from its current baseline of 12 million fiber miles to 58 million fiber miles by the end of 2031, supporting high-bandwidth demands required by modern artificial intelligence workloads.

This infrastructure buildout follows significant initial capital injections from large-scale customer agreements. Lumen has secured $13 billion in contract value from Project Coastal Fiber (PCF) agreements, which played a critical role in recent balance-sheet recapitalization efforts.

Reducing Hyperscaler Dependency

Despite the scale of the PCF agreements, leadership emphasized that future operational expansion will rely on more than hyperscaler partnerships alone.

"We don't need the PCF deals to fund future growth," said Kate Johnson, Chief Executive, Lumen Technologies, addressing investors at the Citi conference.

What the Transition Means for Enterprise Customers

The pivot highlights an industry transition among traditional telecommunications providers toward software-defined infrastructure. As enterprises deploy AI models requiring heavy data transfer across geographically dispersed data centers, network operators are shifting from fixed-line transport to dynamic, on-demand networking platforms designed to capture higher-margin enterprise spending.
