JPMorgan has downgraded DuPont (NYSE:DD) to Neutral from Overweight. The bank cites a cooling in short-cycle inventory recovery and the end of the chemical manufacturer’s initial post-spin outperformance phase. The bank also reduced its price target for the stock to $145 from $172.

"DuPont has outperformed its sector by 20% since its spin in November 2025, but the momentum is now stalling as the expected inventory recovery tapers off," said Chigusa Katoku, analyst at JPMorgan, in a note to clients.

Financial Performance vs. Market Expectations

DuPont's recent earnings reflect a period of operational stability. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported adjusted earnings of $1.88 per share on $1.82 billion in revenue. These figures exceeded analyst consensus, which had projected earnings of $1.76 per share on $1.81 billion in revenue.

The company maintains a stable balance sheet. DuPont currently holds a Piotroski Score of 9, the highest possible rating on the scale, which indicates financial health and profitability. The Piotroski Score is a weighted metric used to assess the strength of a company's financial position by evaluating nine criteria, including profitability, leverage, liquidity, and operating efficiency.

Understanding the Downgrade Rationale

The shift to a Neutral rating marks a transition in how analysts view the company's growth trajectory. The Piotroski score suggests the firm is fundamentally sound, but the downgrade reflects a recalibration of expectations regarding the chemical sector's recovery cycle. JPMorgan’s analysis indicates that the factors which fueled DuPont’s post-spin rally, specifically aggressive inventory restocking and sector-wide cyclical tailwinds, have largely played out.

For investors, the move highlights the difference between a company's internal financial health and its valuation relative to market cycles. DuPont remains a stable operator by traditional accounting metrics, but the analyst outlook suggests that the stock’s potential for further outperformance relative to its industry peers may be limited in the near term as inventory levels stabilize.
