Japan Wholesale Inflation Rises 6.8%, Supporting December BOJ Rate Hike Expectations

Japan's wholesale prices rose 6.8% in September, fueled by a 24.5% increase in import costs, keeping a potential Bank of Japan rate hike on the table for December.

Japan’s wholesale prices climbed 6.8% in the year to September. This maintains upward pressure on costs and keeps market expectations for a Bank of Japan interest rate hike by year-end active. The rise in the Corporate Goods Price Index (CGPI) reflects input cost volatility, driven by a weakening yen and global commodity markets.

"Wholesale inflation will likely re-accelerate given strong uncertainty over the Middle East conflict, which is keeping crude oil prices elevated," said Masato Koike, a senior economist at Sompo Institute Plus.

Import Costs and Currency Impact

A primary driver of the current wholesale price environment is the surge in import costs. According to a Reuters report, the yen-based import price index jumped 24.5% in September compared to the same period last year. This increase highlights how the yen's depreciation amplifies the cost of raw materials and energy for Japanese manufacturers.

Policy Outlook for the Bank of Japan

While wholesale prices remain elevated, analysts are divided on the timing of the next policy shift. The Bank of Japan has signaled that it is monitoring underlying inflation to ensure it stays anchored near its 2% target.

"But there’s no sign of inflationary pressure accelerating sharply for the time being," said Koike, noting that this trend heightens the likelihood that the BOJ will maintain current settings in October before potentially acting in December.

BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda has emphasized the importance of stability in the current economic cycle. In recent remarks, Ueda stated that the economy "has entered a phase where an important policy objective is to keep [underlying inflation] stable at around that level [2%]."

What Is at Stake for Markets

The persistence of wholesale inflation puts the BOJ in a position where it must balance the need for price stability against the risk of stifling economic recovery. For businesses and investors, the trajectory of these indices provides an indicator of how quickly the central bank may move to normalize interest rates. If import-driven costs continue to climb, the pressure on the BOJ to tighten monetary policy to defend the currency and curb input inflation will intensify as the year concludes.
