Dating app operator Bumble is in advanced negotiations to be acquired and taken private by Ithaca Holdings in a deal valuing the company at roughly $1 billion, following a prolonged period of declining active users, falling revenue, and a steep drop in its public share price.
The potential buyout arrives after a sharp upward market reaction. Following reports of the discussions, shares of Bumble surged approximately 50% to $3.81, lifting the company's valuation significantly above its previous market close of roughly $389 million.
"Going private looks less like a strategic masterstroke and more like an admission that Bumble’s current strategy is failing. A change in ownership will not magically fix these fundamental problems," according to an Investing.com report.
Financial Declines and User Losses
The talks come as the dating platform struggles to retain its paying base and reverse declining financial metrics. Total paying users for Bumble fell more than 11% during full-year 2025 to approximately 3.7 million, while annual revenue dropped nearly 10% to about $966 million.
Those downward trends accelerated into mid-2026. In the second quarter ended June 30, paying users decreased by 16.4% year-over-year to 3.2 million, underscoring the headwinds facing the platform.
"AI is not going to be the silver bullet, nor is another round of cost-cutting. Bumble desperately needs to give consumers a compelling reason to return and, crucially, pay," the report noted.
What Is at Stake for Dating App Investors
The potential $1 billion transaction highlights the valuation reset occurring across the online dating sector. Once celebrated for its women-first matching model and a high-profile public debut, Bumble has faced intensifying competition from rival platforms and shifting consumer engagement habits that have weighed heavily on its public equity performance.
