IREN shares have experienced significant volatility following reports of a multiyear cloud services agreement with AI developer Anthropic. Although the partnership suggests a shift toward high-performance computing, neither company has officially confirmed the deal's specific terms, total value, or start date.
Transitioning from Crypto Mining
This potential deal arrives as IREN continues a strategic pivot away from its legacy cryptocurrency mining operations. The transition has been costly. In its most recent quarter, the company reported a net loss of $684 million, a figure largely driven by non-cash charges associated with retiring older mining hardware.
Despite the bottom-line pressure, IREN’s pivot to AI infrastructure is showing top-line growth. In the fiscal fourth quarter, the company's AI cloud revenue more than doubled sequentially to $70.5 million, accounting for approximately 51% of its total quarterly sales.
Infrastructure Financing and Market Performance
To support this expansion, IREN has secured a $2.8 billion financing facility. According to a Yahoo Finance report, this capital covers roughly 90% of the GPU spending required for the company's planned AI infrastructure build-out.
Investor reaction to the news has been mixed, reflecting uncertainty regarding the company's path to profitability during its hardware transition. As of October 16, 2026, IREN stock was trading at $26.99, marking an 11.2% decline from the previous session's close.
What Is at Stake
For IREN, the goal is proving that its high-intensity computing facilities can generate sustainable margins comparable to the crypto-mining industry. The potential Anthropic contract serves as a test for whether the company can transition from a commodity-focused miner into a provider of AI infrastructure. For market participants, the primary concern remains the company's ability to manage the heavy capital expenditures required for GPU acquisition while navigating the transition-related losses currently weighing on its balance sheet.
