France's economy expanded by a modest 0.1% in the third quarter according to estimates from the Bank of France, as growth in the service sector offset contractions across manufacturing, construction, and agriculture.
The preliminary 0.1% growth figure highlights a sluggish macroeconomic environment for the eurozone's second-largest economy heading into the final months of the year. The central bank's latest reading sets a cautious baseline ahead of official national accounts data.
"The service sector offset declines in manufacturing, construction, and agriculture during the third quarter," according to a Reuters report detailing the central bank estimates.
Sector Breakdown and Executive Survey Insights
The Bank of France's monthly survey of 8,500 company executives provided a detailed look at the industrial and service conditions during the period. While broader manufacturing faced headwinds, output in specific high-demand niches continued to rise.
- Aerospace manufacturing: Maintained solid order books and production momentum.
- Electrical equipment: Benefited directly from surging infrastructure needs tied to data center construction.
- Manufacturing pace: Overall factory output increased in September, though at a slower pace than economists and business leaders initially anticipated.
What Is at Stake for French GDP Data
The persistent weakness across multiple core sectors underscores the fragile nature of European industrial demand. With traditional growth drivers like construction and agriculture contracting, the broader economy remains heavily reliant on resilient consumer and business services.
Market participants are now looking toward official verification. INSEE, the national statistics agency, is scheduled to publish its preliminary third-quarter gross domestic product reading on October 30.
