FormFactor shares rose 3.6% in after-hours trading following a technology collaboration and a $300 million equity investment from automated test equipment provider Teradyne. The transaction pairs advanced test architectures with FormFactor's probe card technology to address manufacturing challenges in semiconductor sectors.
"The semiconductor industry is entering a period where test performance, scalability, and time-to-market are becoming decisive competitive advantages," said Mike Slessor, Chief Executive Officer of FormFactor, in a statement regarding the partnership.
Investment Terms and Collaboration Scope
Under the terms of the agreement, Teradyne will purchase $300 million in FormFactor common stock, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, according to a Yahoo Finance report. The technical collaboration will focus on advancing test solutions for high-performance compute, advanced packaging, high-bandwidth memory, and silicon photonics applications.
"The most demanding test challenges in advanced packaging, silicon photonics, and memory cannot be solved by a single company. By investing in FormFactor and combining our test platforms with FormFactor's probe and interface expertise, we are building a validated path to production for our shared customers, and reinforcing our commitment to an open, interoperable ecosystem," commented Gregory Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Teradyne.
Market Performance and Valuation Context
Prior to the announcement, FormFactor Inc (NASDAQ: FORM) closed at $105.01, down 7.35% from its previous close of $113.34, according to Finnhub market data. The equity injection represents a capital commitment from Teradyne, aligning two major players in the semiconductor test and measurement sector.
What Advanced Packaging Test Means for Chipmakers
As chip designers shift toward 2.5D and 3D architectures, heterogeneous integration, and high-bandwidth memory to sustain performance gains, testing these complex stacked dies has become difficult. Traditional test methods struggle to detect defects in high-density interconnects before packaging is finalized. By combining Teradyne's test systems with FormFactor's specialized wafer probe cards, the partnership aims to improve validation workflows for manufacturers producing advanced compute silicon.
