Vertical integration in the hard disk drive industry is shifting production bottlenecks upstream into core components, creating a structural advantage for Seagate Technology and Western Digital, according to an Evercore analysis. The shift allows manufacturers to meet surging exabyte demand while maintaining strict discipline on finished-drive shipment volumes.

"Vertical integration shifts the production bottleneck upstream into head wafers, HAMR photonics, magnetic media, glass substrates, deposition, and testing, favoring Seagate and Western Digital," said Evercore analysts in a note to clients.

Areal Density and Cost Dynamics

Hard disk drive producers are expanding storage capacity primarily by increasing areal density, which delivers significantly more terabytes per physical drive rather than requiring a corresponding expansion in unit volume. By raising density, makers can scale storage output efficiently to support global data center expansion.

Advanced manufacturing economics improve substantially at higher capacity thresholds. According to Evercore estimates, a 32TB, 10-disk heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) drive carries a bill of materials of approximately $190 to $195. Cost efficiencies amplify further as designs scale toward 40TB, where flat unit production costs could lower the cost per terabyte by about 20%.

Market Valuation for Evercore

Alongside the supply chain evaluation, shares of Evercore Inc (EVR) traded at $271.86, rising 1.92% from a previous close of $266.75, according to market data as of October 9, 2026, at 20:00 UTC.

Why Supply Chain Control Matters

Control over specialized inputs like HAMR photonics and head wafers acts as a key competitive moat in the storage sector. As cloud service providers demand denser storage media to manage exponential data growth, integrated manufacturers are better positioned to manage margins and component scarcity than competitors reliant on outsourced assembly.
