Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek is preparing for a potential public offering by planning to hire Yan Wentao, a partner at venture-capital firm GL Ventures, as its first chief financial officer, according to a Reuters report. The appointment marks a key governance milestone for the model developer as it builds out its financial infrastructure following rapid growth in the global AI market.
Born in 1991, Yan brings dealmaking and investment experience to the role, having previously backed prominent AI developers such as rival firm MiniMax, according to the venture-capital publication Zero2IPO. His background in venture capital places him at the intersection of China's artificial intelligence funding ecosystem and enterprise-scale financial structuring.
Preparing for a STAR Market Listing
The incoming CFO appointment accompanies broader corporate restructuring efforts by DeepSeek. The startup previously hired Chinese brokerage CITIC Securities to prepare for a possible domestic listing on Shanghai's technology-focused STAR Market, according to the Reuters report.
The STAR Market serves as China's primary exchange for high-tech and innovative enterprises, requiring rigorous financial auditing and corporate compliance standards that make the addition of a dedicated chief financial officer essential.
Valuation and Fundraising Context
DeepSeek's public market preparations follow a series of capital raises that have surged its valuation amid intense international competition. The company is currently engaged in an ongoing fundraising round valuing the business at approximately 500 billion yuan, or about $74 billion.
That figure builds upon a previous June funding event that raised about $7.4 billion, pushing DeepSeek's post-money valuation to more than $50 billion.
What Is at Stake for China's AI Sector
The structural evolution of DeepSeek highlights the maturation of China's domestic generative AI sector from research laboratories into heavily capitalized corporate entities. By securing experienced financial leadership and aligning with top-tier brokerages for a prospective STAR Market debut, the startup is positioning itself to navigate domestic regulatory hurdles and the capital-intensive demands of training frontier artificial intelligence models.
