Caleres reported fiscal second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $0.47 per share, surpassing the $0.35 reported in the same period last year. Growth in its brand portfolio countered persistent sales declines at its Famous Footwear retail segment. The company’s performance shows a divergence between wholesale brand strength and the difficult consumer environment facing its brick-and-mortar retail footprint.
"Back to school came later than expected due to the shift in Labor Day timing and several shifts in tax-free events," said Jay Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of Caleres, in a statement regarding the results.
Segment Performance Divergence
The company’s brand portfolio segment recorded a 23.6% increase in sales, with 8.2% attributed to organic growth. Famous Footwear reported a 6.3% decline in sales, driven by weakness in lifestyle athletic categories. This retail softness has forced the company to recalibrate its inventory levels as it navigates changes in consumer behavior.
"We expect continuing softness in certain categories of our Famous business and related promotional activity as we adjust our inventories through the balance of the year," said Daniel Karpel, Chief Financial Officer of Caleres.
Full-Year Outlook and Tariff Risks
Management raised the lower end of its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to a range of $1.50 to $1.65, citing margin expansion initiatives. The company’s forward-looking statements include caution regarding macroeconomic headwinds. CFO Daniel Karpel noted that Caleres is operating under the assumption that new tariffs will replace prior International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) refunds, which have historically provided a financial cushion for the company.
What Is at Stake for Shareholders
The company's ability to maintain earnings growth while retail sales remain under pressure depends on the execution of its inventory management strategy and the performance of its brand portfolio. With the retail environment featuring high levels of promotional activity, the company's shift toward its wholesale business model is a component of its effort to protect margins through the remainder of the fiscal year.
