Brent crude rose 3% to $108 a barrel while U.S. benchmark crude climbed 2.9% to $103, as escalating geopolitical disruptions across critical Middle Eastern shipping channels and energy infrastructure tightened global oil supplies.

The rally follows fresh security threats in vital waterways and attacks on key regional export pipelines, forcing maritime operators to absorb significantly higher transit times and fuel expenses while central banks weigh renewed monetary tightening.

"OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman warning of a 10% risk AI could cause human extinction by decade's end," the report noted amid broader discussions of technology and supply chain risk.

Tankers Divert Around Africa

Crude transporters navigating away from the Bab el-Mandeb strait and the Red Sea are increasingly opting for the longer passage around Africa's Cape of Good Hope. According to a Yahoo Finance report, this detour adds an estimated 22 days to typical voyage times, driving up vessel hire rates and fuel consumption to record highs.

The routing shift reduces active global tanker capacity by tying up vessels at sea for weeks longer per trip. These logistical hurdles compound ongoing physical security threats to export infrastructure across the region.

Pipeline Attacks Threaten Output

Compounding the maritime bottlenecks, Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline was struck by drone attacks launched from Iraq. The vital infrastructure corridor, which transports 4 million to 5 million barrels of crude oil per day from eastern production fields to Red Sea export terminals, underscores the vulnerability of overland transit routes.

Federal Reserve Policy Expectations

The surge in energy prices complicates conditions for policymakers at the U.S. central bank. Futures markets indicate an 86% probability of a 25 basis point Federal Reserve interest rate hike at the upcoming policy meeting.

Major Wall Street institutions, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Citi, have adjusted their macroeconomic forecasts to price in renewed monetary tightening. Higher crude prices threaten to reaccelerate headline inflation metrics, leaving central bankers balancing cooling domestic economic indicators against imported energy cost pressures.
