BofA Securities downgraded Smithfield Foods (NASDAQ:SFD) from Buy to Neutral and reduced its price target from $25 to $21. The firm cited difficult conditions in the pork market that have negatively affected the company's profitability outlook.
The downgrade follows a reassessment of Smithfield's operating environment, particularly regarding its Fresh Pork and Hog Production segments. BofA analysts adjusted their target price multiple from 8.0x to 7.5x the firm’s 2027 EBITDA estimate to account for these market variables.
"We are lowering our adjusted operating profit forecasts for fiscal years 2026, 2027, and 2028 by 4%, 7%, and 5% respectively, reflecting the persistent pressure on hog margins and pork values," BofA analysts noted in a report on the downgrade.
Market Performance and Valuation
Smithfield Foods shares have declined 34.5% over the past six months. The stock is trading at $18.88, near its 52-week low of $18.43. This decline led analysts to re-evaluate the company's valuation in light of cyclical industry challenges.
Other firms continue to monitor the company's structural position. Stephens recently initiated coverage of Smithfield Foods with an Equal Weight rating and a $22 price target. Stephens analysts noted the company’s scale in hog production and packaged meats, suggesting that the company's infrastructure remains a factor in its positioning despite current market difficulties.
Impact of Segment Performance
Investors remain concerned about the volatility of the hog production cycle and the pass-through of costs in the packaged meats business. The downward revisions to operating profit forecasts for the next three fiscal years indicate that BofA expects these cyclical challenges to persist. The adjustment of the EBITDA multiple reflects the increased risk profile surrounding the firm's core commodity-linked segments.
