Tonnellerie Francois Freres shares fell 7% after reporting a first-quarter revenue drop of 36.4% to €56.9 million, driven by customer destocking in the United States and a slowdown in bourbon demand, according to an Investing.com report.

The steep revenue decline at Tonnellerie Francois Freres highlights broader supply chain adjustments across the global cooperage sector. As American whiskey makers and wine producers manage excess inventory built up during previous years, demand for new oak barrels has contracted significantly.

Division-by-Division Breakdown

The downturn heavily impacted both core operating segments during the opening period of the fiscal year. The alcohol division experienced a revenue drop of 41.2% to €21.9 million, weighed down by extended distillery closures.

Specifically, the bourbon division suffered a 46% decline at the start of the fiscal year as reduced distillation schedules slowed cask deliveries. Meanwhile, the wine division recorded a 32.9% drop to €35 million, constrained by weak U.S. demand, an unfavorable exchange rate with a low dollar, and elevated inventory levels across wine estates.

Launch of TFF Upcycling

Responding to shifting market conditions, the company announced on September 7 the launch of TFF Upcycling. This new business unit is dedicated to collecting, processing, and selling used barrels from wine estates.

The initiative forms part of a vertical integration strategy intended to capture secondary market value as customers seek cost-effective alternatives to brand-new oak barrels during periods of industry retrenchment.

Multi-Year Outlook and Recovery Timeline

Management warned that financial pressures will likely persist well beyond the current fiscal period. Tonnellerie Francois Freres expects 2026 and 2027 to mark another period of declining results due to anticipated further falls in revenue.

Despite the multi-year headwinds, leadership anticipates that the current downcycle will bottom out and conclude by 2028 as global barrel inventories normalize.
