Bloom Energy, Illumina, and Everpure will join the S&P 500 effective prior to the open of trading on Monday, September 21, 2026, marking a notable shift in the benchmark index during its upcoming quarterly rebalance.

The additions trigger mandatory portfolio adjustments for passive exchange-traded funds and mutual funds that track the index, frequently resulting in increased buying volume for the newly included equities.

Following the announcement, Bloom Energy shares jumped 6.2% in extended trading on Friday.

Who Is Out?

To accommodate the incoming companies, Molson Coors Beverage, The Trade Desk, and Builders FirstSource are being removed from the S&P 500. All three departed large-cap equities will migrate down to the S&P SmallCap 600.

Index reconstitution events often cause significant volatility for demoted firms, as institutional funds tracking the large-cap benchmark liquidate their positions to match the updated index weighting.

Broader Index Adjustments

The September rebalance also brings notable structural changes to the S&P 100.

  • Additions: Dell Technologies, Palo Alto Networks, Arista Networks, and Sandisk are joining the S&P 100.
  • Removals: Honeywell Aerospace, Nike, Simon Property Group, and Colgate-Palmolive are leaving the S&P 100.

Why Index Changes Matter

Inclusion in major indexes like the S&P 500 serves as a milestone for corporate maturity, requiring firms to meet strict profitability, liquidity, and market capitalization criteria. S&P Dow Jones Indices evaluates constituents quarterly to ensure accurate representation of the broader United States economy.
