Bitwise Investment Advisers is liquidating and closing its Dogecoin exchange-traded fund, trading under the ticker BWOW on the NYSE Arca, as shrinking assets prompt a product range optimization. The fund's final trading day is scheduled for October 14, 2026, according to an Investing.com report.

"Bitwise determined to liquidate the fund as it continues to optimize its product range to meet evolving investor needs," the firm said in a statement regarding the closure.

Wind-Down Timeline and Cash Distribution

The closure follows a schedule coordinated with the New York Stock Exchange for an orderly delisting. The creation of new shares will cease prior to the market open on October 15, 2026, halting any further inflows into the vehicle.

Remaining shareholders will receive the net asset value of their shares calculated as of October 21. According to Investing.com data, cash distributions will be paid out to investors on October 22, 2026.

Shrinking Assets and Fund Performance

The fund faced capital contraction prior to the wind-down decision. According to a Forbes report, the ETF shrank from an initial $2.5 million seed investment down to just $687,713. Trading activity also dried up, with the fund recording a volume of only 400 shares on the day the closure was announced.

The swift retreat highlights liquidity challenges facing niche single-crypto exchange-traded products that fail to capture sustained institutional or retail momentum following launch.

Scale of Bitwise Operations

Despite the shuttering of the Dogecoin vehicle, Bitwise Asset Management maintains a large footprint in the digital asset management sector. The firm manages $9.0 billion in client assets across more than 70 distinct investment products.

Bitwise serves over 5,500 private wealth teams, registered investment advisers, family offices, institutional investors, 21 banks, and broker-dealers. The decision to prune the Dogecoin ETF reflects a portfolio review designed to eliminate underperforming strategies and concentrate resources on higher-demand cryptocurrency offerings.
