Barclays has increased its year-end 2026 S&P 500 price target to 7,950 from 7,800. The firm cites corporate earnings growth fueled by investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The firm also maintained its 2027 target at 8,800, indicating a positive outlook for the index.
"The result is that earnings do most of the heavy lifting in our target increase," the bank's strategists wrote in a note to clients.
Earnings Growth and AI Investment
The upward revision follows a lift in earnings-per-share (EPS) estimates. Barclays now projects S&P 500 EPS to reach $365 for fiscal 2026, up from its previous forecast of $337. The firm also raised its 2027 EPS estimate to $414, compared to the earlier projection of $389.
This outlook is tied to the capital allocation flowing into AI infrastructure. Barclays projects that hyperscaler capital expenditure will exceed $1.1 trillion by 2027, a 67% increase year-over-year. This spending is expected to continue acting as an engine for corporate earnings growth among large-cap technology firms.
Sector Shifts: Utilities Downgraded
While the index outlook remains positive, Barclays has adjusted its sector-specific recommendations. The firm downgraded the Utilities sector to Neutral from Positive, citing regulatory and legislative hurdles.
According to the Barclays research note, these challenges include:
- The failure to advance wildfire liability reform in California.
- Bipartisan resistance against data center permitting processes in several U.S. states.
What Is at Stake
For market participants, the target adjustment highlights the reliance of index performance on earnings expansion rather than multiple expansion. As the S&P 500 approaches these higher valuation targets, the ability of technology-heavy firms to convert capital expenditures into realized earnings growth becomes a variable for the market's trajectory through 2027.
