The Bank of Finland has upgraded its economic growth projections for 2026 and 2027, citing a surge in exports and foreign direct investment. The central bank now anticipates GDP growth of 1.7% in 2026 and 1.6% in 2027, an increase from its June forecasts of 0.7% and 1.2%, respectively.

"The performance of the Finnish economy in the first part of the year was stronger than previously forecast. The increase in exports and investment is creating the conditions for more widespread growth," said Juuso Vanhala, Bank of Finland Head of Forecasting.

Macroeconomic Projections and Labor Trends

The upward revision reflects a shift in the country's economic momentum. Alongside the improved growth outlook, the labor market is expected to show gradual recovery. The unemployment rate is projected to hold at 10.4% throughout this year, and it is forecasted to decline to 9.8% in 2027 and 9.0% by 2028.

The Role of Foreign Direct Investment

A primary driver of this outlook is a capital infusion from Alphabet’s Google. The tech giant recently announced a €13 billion ($15 billion) investment in Finnish AI infrastructure to be deployed over the next two years. This commitment represents Google's largest single investment in Europe to date.

Economic Impact for Finland

For an open economy like Finland, large-scale infrastructure projects act as a catalyst for industrial activity. By anchoring AI-related data infrastructure within the country, the investment is expected to stimulate demand for high-tech services, construction, and energy sector development.

These projections from the Bank of Finland suggest that the economy is moving beyond previous stagnation, with the influx of foreign capital providing a structural tailwind for employment and output.
