Baird upgraded Humana (NYSE: HUM) to Outperform from Neutral because the firm sees a path for the insurer to restore margins in its Medicare Advantage business by 2028. The firm increased its price target to $596 from $390, indicating confidence in the company's profitability recovery.
Drivers of the Margin Recovery
Baird expects Humana’s individual Medicare Advantage margins to expand from current near-breakeven levels to over 3% within the next four years. Analysts at the firm identified catalysts for this turnaround:
- Conservative benefits and bids: Strategic adjustments to plan design and pricing.
- Improved Stars performance: Enhanced quality ratings that influence government reimbursement rates.
- Cost trend deceleration: An expected cooling in the growth rate of national healthcare utilization costs.
Earnings Growth Projections
Baird projects that Humana can achieve adjusted earnings per share (EPS) exceeding $35 by 2028. This forecast implies an acceleration in financial performance, representing an approximate 99% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2026 to 2028.
This upgrade follows a period of scrutiny from Wall Street regarding the Medicare Advantage sector. Other firms have adjusted their stances on the industry. Cantor Fitzgerald and Wolfe Research have provided updated coverage on the sector as insurers navigate shifting regulatory environments and utilization headwinds.
What Is at Stake for Investors
Medicare Advantage is the primary growth engine for major U.S. health insurers, but the sector has faced margin compression due to rising medical care costs and lower-than-anticipated government payment rate updates. For Humana, which maintains a heavy concentration in the Medicare Advantage market, executing on these margin targets is necessary to stabilize its earnings profile and regain investor confidence after recent volatility in the managed care space.
According to an Investing.com report, the transition from breakeven margins to a 3% target is the linchpin for the firm’s valuation model. The ability to meet these benchmarks depends on the company's success in balancing competitive benefit offerings with the need to maintain underwriting discipline in a high-utilization environment.
