Accenture has agreed to a $25 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to resolve allegations that its internal hiring and promotion practices improperly factored in race and sex. The agreement follows federal intervention in corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including enforcement actions against other consulting firms.
"We have cooperated with the government's review, and we are pleased to put this matter behind us to avoid the costs and resource demands of prolonged litigation," an Accenture spokesperson said.
Settlement Terms and Financial Impact
The settlement requires Accenture to pay $25 million to the U.S. government. The financial terms include civil penalties and a 4% annual interest rate applied to the total settlement amount, beginning September 9, 2026, according to a Reuters report.
As of September 17, 2026, shares of Accenture PLC (ACN) were trading at $189.60. The settlement is a one-time expenditure as the company navigates regulatory scrutiny regarding its human resources policies.
Industry Trends in Federal Enforcement
Accenture is among several firms to face such allegations this year. The Department of Justice has launched probes into consulting and technology firms regarding their hiring frameworks, resulting in settlements:
- Deloitte: Paid $21.5 million in August 2026 to resolve similar government claims.
- IBM: Reached a $17 million settlement in April 2026 regarding its own employment practices.
These enforcement actions show a regulatory environment where federal authorities are scrutinizing how large corporations implement DEI programs. The government's position centers on whether such initiatives run afoul of anti-discrimination statutes by placing weight on protected characteristics during recruitment and career advancement processes.
What Is at Stake for Corporate DEI
The trend of settlements shows the legal risks companies face when designing and executing diversity initiatives. For large professional services firms, which rely on high-volume hiring and structured promotion paths, the cost of aligning these programs with federal interpretations of equal opportunity law has become an operational and financial consideration.
