Yelp is shifting its business strategy toward an AI model, aiming to reach $250 million in annualized other revenue by the end of 2028. The company is moving from a product-led growth strategy to one focused on monetizing its proprietary local business data through new subscription tools and strategic AI partnerships.
This target represents an expansion from the $133 million annualized rate Yelp reported in the second quarter of 2026. The strategy centers on leveraging the company's repository of local business reviews and consumer interactions to drive revenue streams.
"I think something that's become increasingly clear is that Yelp has a very unique data asset," said Jeremy Stoppelman, Chief Executive, Yelp, in a statement at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference 2026. He compared the company's trust and breadth of information to platforms like Reddit and Wikipedia.
Scaling AI-Native Products
A core component of this transition is the deployment of AI-integrated products. Yelp Host, an AI-powered phone receptionist for restaurants, reached a $2.4 million run rate as of July 2026. The product's subscription revenue grew 98% during the second quarter, signaling adoption among local businesses looking to automate customer inquiries.
The company is also expanding its reach through third-party AI interfaces. It has integrated its Request a Quote feature directly into OpenAI's ChatGPT. This integration utilizes a Model Context Protocol widget, which allows users to interact with Yelp's business data and submit service requests without leaving the chat interface.
"The most elegant thing about Request a Quote, especially in the AI era, is its monetization that's built right in," Stoppelman said.
Adapting to AI
The pivot requires internal operational changes and a modernization of the core consumer-facing platform. Stoppelman noted that the company has focused on integrating AI elements into its product suite to maintain relevance as search behavior shifts toward AI-native platforms.
"We had to rapidly adapt that technology, both internally, in terms of how we work, but then especially modernize the product, bring AI elements into it," said Stoppelman.
This shift is important for Yelp as it seeks to diversify revenue beyond its traditional advertising model. By embedding monetization into the AI user journey, the company aims to capture value from the increasing volume of local search queries being handled by large language models rather than traditional search engines.
