Vertex is pivoting from its role as a specialized tax calculation engine to a full-service compliance platform. The company aims to accelerate annual growth from 10-12% to 12-14%. It is executing a Decision-to-Defense strategy to manage the entire tax lifecycle, which covers everything from initial product categorization to audit defense.

"Vertex really exists to help our customers manage their tax and compliance across a full life cycle of activity. We've been calling that Decision-to-Defense because we've grown up as a tax calculation company," said Chris Young, CEO of Vertex, at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.

Expanding the Compliance Lifecycle

The new strategy addresses the increasing complexity of global tax mandates, such as the rise of mandatory e-invoicing. By integrating product categorization, tax computation, e-invoicing, and filing into a single workflow, Vertex intends to capture a larger share of corporate tax departments' operational budgets.

This transition marks a departure from the company's traditional focus on point-in-time calculation. By positioning itself as an end-to-end provider, Vertex aims to reduce the difficulty multinational corporations face when navigating disparate tax jurisdictions and reporting requirements.

AI Implementation and Operational Focus

Vertex is increasing its investment in artificial intelligence, but management emphasized that the core tax computation and e-invoicing systems remain deterministic. The company maintains that these systems must be accurate every time, so it limits the role of AI to supporting manual tasks rather than replacing the underlying tax logic.

Vertex has moved its first commercial AI offering, Smart Categorization, into production with several retail clients. This tool automates the classification of products for tax purposes, which is a labor-intensive process that requires mapping inventory to specific tax codes.

"We're going to continue to leverage in and make investments in AI, make investments in e-invoicing, make investments in the platform, and that's how we think about this as we move forward," said John Schwab, CFO of Vertex, during the same conference session.

Market Position and Compliance Stakes

For enterprise clients, the stakes involve operational efficiency and regulatory risk. As more nations adopt real-time e-invoicing requirements, companies are seeking consolidated platforms that provide a defense layer during audits. By embedding these capabilities directly into the software that calculates the tax, Vertex is attempting to protect its core revenue streams against the commoditization of basic tax calculation services.
