United Natural Foods (UNFI) reported a 48.3% increase in adjusted EBITDA for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. This result reflects a strategy prioritizing operational efficiency and debt reduction rather than volume growth. The company’s net leverage ratio improved to 2.2x, which is its lowest level since 2018.

According to a company report, adjusted EBITDA reached $172 million for the quarter, compared to $116 million in the same period last year. The net leverage ratio dropped from 3.3x one year ago.

Operational Efficiency Gains

UNFI credits these financial improvements to internal process changes intended to streamline its supply chain. The company finished the deployment of an AI-based inventory planning platform and implemented Lean daily management practices across its network of 44 distribution centers.

These operational changes aim to optimize inventory turnover and reduce overhead costs. By focusing on these internal metrics, the company intends to sustain profitability while navigating the food distribution environment.

Forward-Looking Guidance

Following the fourth-quarter performance, UNFI management raised its outlook for the upcoming fiscal year. The company expects adjusted EBITDA for fiscal 2027 to fall within a range of $730 million to $780 million, an increase from its previous guidance of more than $730 million.

This updated guidance indicates that leadership expects the recent improvements in operational efficiency to continue into the next fiscal cycle. The company remains focused on maintaining a disciplined balance sheet while integrating its new technological tools into daily operations.

Why This Matters

For investors and stakeholders, the shift represents a transition from a model focused on growth to one prioritizing margin expansion and debt serviceability. Reducing leverage to a multi-year low provides the company with financial flexibility, which may lower interest expenses and improve cash flow as UNFI refines its distribution network.
