Tesla shares fell 6% on Friday as the long-awaited launch of the Cybercab failed to impress investors, compounded by a new regulatory safety probe. The under-the-radar debut omitted key production scale details and a public livestream, leaving markets uncertain about the vehicle's commercial deployment timeline.
"The event lacked a public livestream, a notable departure from Tesla's traditionally theatrical product reveals," wrote RBC Capital Markets analysts.
What Happened at the Austin Event?
The unveiling took place at an invite-only gathering in Austin on Thursday. Unlike previous high-profile product showcases hosted by the automaker, the event was closed to the general public, featured no livestream, and did not include an appearance from Chief Executive Elon Musk.
Despite the muted presentation, Musk took to social media to celebrate the vehicle's aesthetic and broader transport vision.
"We are indeed entering a literal golden era of transport, That's why Cybercab is gold!" Elon Musk posted on X.
The vehicle itself is a bronze-colored, two-seat robotaxi featuring scissor, or butterfly, doors. Designed without a steering wheel or pedals, the Cybercab has been in production since April, though Thursday's rollout offered few specifics on manufacturing volume or commercial rollout schedules.
Regulatory Scrutiny Adds Pressure
Compounding the underwhelming market reaction, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiated an audit query into the vehicle. The federal inquiry aims to determine whether the purpose-built robotaxi complies with existing U.S. federal motor vehicle safety standards.
Autonomous and steering-wheel-free vehicles face rigorous regulatory hurdles before operating widely on public roads. The NHTSA probe introduces fresh compliance questions just as Tesla attempts to transition from traditional consumer vehicles to fully autonomous transport systems.
