Starbucks is exploring the potential sale of a majority stake in its Japanese operations, a move that could value the business at approximately $3 billion. The decision comes as CEO Brian Niccol looks to streamline the company’s global footprint and sharpen its focus on core North American profitability.

The Japan unit, which currently operates 1,883 stores, represents nearly 9% of the company’s total global footprint as of September 2025. This potential divestment reflects broader efforts by the coffee chain to re-evaluate its international holdings, including recent structural changes made to its business in China.

"Starbucks Japan is a strong business, with deep brand affinity and trusted presence built over 30 years in the region," said a Starbucks spokesperson.

Evolution of the Japan Business

Should a sale proceed at the rumored $3 billion valuation, it would represent an increase in the unit's worth over the last decade. In 2014, Starbucks moved to take full control of its Japanese operations by buying out its partner, Sazaby League, in a deal valued at approximately $1.5 billion. At the time of that acquisition, Starbucks paid roughly $914 million to secure the remaining equity.

"We continually assess the best structure to be most meaningful to customers and create value for shareholders," said a Starbucks spokesperson.

Strategic Realignment

The move is part of a pivot under CEO Brian Niccol to simplify the company’s organizational structure. By offloading majority stakes in mature international markets, the company may reduce operational overhead and capital intensity in regions where the brand is already established. This allows the firm to concentrate resources on its primary North American markets.

Following the reports, shares of Starbucks (SBUX) closed at $95.83 on September 18, 2026, marking a decline of 0.87% for the session. The potential sale remains in the exploratory phase, with no final agreements or structures confirmed.
