South Africa's economy contracted by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2026 on a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter basis, according to an Investing.com report, reversing earlier gains and falling short of economist projections.
The second-quarter decline worse than the 0.1% contraction forecast by economists polled ahead of the release by Investing.com. The latest reading marks a sharp reversal from the first quarter of the year, which registered a revised growth rate of 0.4%.
Year-on-Year Expansion Slows
On an annualized, year-on-year basis, gross domestic product expanded 0.9% in the April-June period. That performance also missed market expectations, coming in below the 1.2% increase anticipated by surveyed economists.
What the Contraction Means
Economic output in South Africa remains subject to volatile sectoral shifts and infrastructure constraints that periodically disrupt momentum. The return to negative quarterly growth underlines the fragility of the broader economic recovery following the modest gains recorded earlier in the year.
