Singapore headline inflation reached a near two-year high of 2.2% year on year in July, driven by global energy pressures stemming from the Iran war, though the increase slightly undershot economists' expectations. The figure accelerated from a 1.9% rise in June, marking the highest level recorded since late 2024, but trailed the 2.3% consensus forecast among economists polled by Reuters.

"Global oil prices remain high and volatile while adverse weather conditions are expected to lower agricultural yields and raise Singapore's imported food prices," according to a joint release by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Underlying price pressures also climbed but remained below projections. Core inflation, which excludes the volatile costs of private transport and accommodation, rose to 2.0% compared to the 2.2% forecast by economists. Despite the annual acceleration, consumer prices actually fell 0.2% on a month-on-month basis.

Fiscal Response and GDP Growth

As a net importer of energy and food, Singapore remains vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East. In response to the economic fallout from the Iran war, the government rolled out two support packages totaling about 2 billion Singapore dollars. These relief measures feature direct cash handouts, consumption vouchers for households, and tax rebates for companies to cushion the impact of higher imported costs.

Alongside the inflation update, the government upgraded its economic outlook. Singapore raised its full-year 2026 gross domestic product growth forecast to a range of 4.5% to 5.5%, more than doubling the lower bound of its previous projection of 2% to 4%.
