Wealth manager Quilter has initiated the third and final £30 million tranche of its £100 million share buyback program. This phase concludes a capital return strategy started earlier this year. The company expects to finish this segment by November 30, 2026, although the program permits an extension until December 17, 2026.
Quilter announced the £100 million initiative on March 4, 2026. The firm repurchased £70 million worth of its own shares during the first two tranches.
Execution and Share Cancellation
Quilter has engaged Merrill Lynch International to manage the final phase of the buyback. This third tranche is capped at 118,097,142 shares, which sets a limit on the volume of equity the firm intends to remove from the market during this period.
Since the program began, the company has acquired and cancelled 37.6 million shares. These shares were repurchased at an average price of 186 pence per share, according to company disclosures.
Understanding Share Buybacks
Share buybacks occur when a company uses cash reserves to purchase its own outstanding stock from the open market. This process reduces the total number of shares available to the public. This typically increases the earnings per share (EPS) for remaining shareholders if the company's net income remains stable. By cancelling the acquired shares, Quilter is consolidating ownership for existing investors.
For companies in the wealth management sector, capital return programs often signal management's view on the firm's cash flow generation and balance sheet health. The completion of this £100 million program represents a deployment of capital intended to return surplus value to shareholders instead of retaining the cash for operational expansion or acquisitions.
