OpenAI Clarifies Samsung Chip Partnership Following Comments

OpenAI is deepening hardware and enterprise ties with Samsung Electronics as the artificial intelligence developer scales its infrastructure, though local representatives emphasized that the remarks reflected an existing collaboration.

"One of the areas where we have made the most progress and gained the most recognition with Samsung Electronics is our joint production and research on the next-generation chips we are developing," said General Manager Harrison Kim in recent statements.

Following the remarks, OpenAI Korea clarified on Thursday that the commentary regarding expanded cooperation was made in the context of their established relationship. The existing ties include Samsung's corporate adoption of ChatGPT and a letter of intent signed last October, with OpenAI stating, "We have nothing new to announce on this front."

Custom Silicon and Supply Chain Strategy

The discussions surrounding hardware manufacturing sit alongside OpenAI's broader semiconductor diversification efforts. In June, OpenAI unveiled its first custom artificial intelligence chip, named Jalapeno, which was designed in partnership with Broadcom for AI inference workloads. Manufacturing for that custom silicon is slated through Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

Simultaneously, memory supply agreements anchor OpenAI's infrastructure expansion. Last year, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix signed letters of intent to supply critical memory components for OpenAI's large-scale Stargate data center project.

Enterprise Adoption in South Korea

The hardware supply and research discussions parallel rapid commercial growth for OpenAI within the South Korean market. Corporate adoption metrics indicate that the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users at South Korean companies and institutions surged roughly 28-fold as of the end of August compared to the same period a year earlier.
