Moderna is shifting to a dual-growth strategy. It is using its diversified vaccine portfolio to fund its oncology pipeline while targeting a 2028 break-even milestone. This transition moves the company away from its pandemic-era reliance on a single product toward a broader platform model.

"It’s a statistically significant and clinically meaningful result, and it’s the first time anybody’s ever achieved that kind of benefit over KEYTRUDA in the adjuvant setting in melanoma," said Stephen Hoge, President of Moderna, at the Morgan Stanley Global Healthcare Conference.

Advancing the Oncology Pipeline

The company’s lead oncology candidate, intismeran, has shown efficacy in clinical trials. According to a transcript of the conference, the study delivered the first statistically significant adjuvant benefit observed against Merck’s KEYTRUDA in this clinical setting. Moderna reports it has treated approximately 3,000 patients with intismeran across more than 40 countries. It possesses a manufacturing infrastructure capable of scaling sevenfold within a 12-month period.

Diversification and Financial Targets

Moderna’s current product lineup includes five approved offerings: its COVID-19 vaccine, mFlusiva, its RSV vaccine, a flu/COVID combination, and mNEXSPIKE. This portfolio is intended to provide the cash flow necessary to sustain research and development efforts in cancer therapeutics as the company works toward its 2028 break-even target.

As of the market close on September 16, 2026, Moderna Inc. (MRNA) shares were priced at $146.97, reflecting a 2.23% increase for the day.

Strategic Implications

The shift toward oncology represents a capital allocation move for the company. By embedding its mRNA technology into cancer treatment, Moderna is attempting to compete in the oncology market, where traditional therapies like immune checkpoint inhibitors (such as KEYTRUDA) have long set the standard of care. The company’s ability to scale manufacturing will determine if it can commercialize personalized cancer vaccines on a global scale.
