Limoneira (NASDAQ: LMNR) shares fell 6.7% in after-hours trading following a fiscal third-quarter report that showed a wider-than-expected net loss and a decline in total revenue. These results reflect volatility in the agricultural sector, even as the company reports gains in operational efficiency.
For the quarter ended July 31, Limoneira reported a net loss of $3.0 million, or $0.17 per diluted share. This is a widening from the $1.0 million loss, or $0.06 per share, recorded in the same period last year. Revenue for the quarter fell 7.8% year-over-year to $43.8 million, failing to meet analyst consensus estimates.
"We are continuing to make progress on our value creation strategy," said Harold Edwards, Chief Executive of Limoneira, in a statement regarding the quarterly results.
Operational Efficiency and Revenue Pressure
Despite the bottom-line miss, Limoneira reported a 30% increase in adjusted EBITDA, which reached $3.9 million for the quarter. This suggests that while top-line revenue has faced headwinds, the company’s efforts to streamline operations and improve cost control are yielding results.
Management is focusing on strategic levers to stabilize margins, including the optimization of lemon packing operations through its partnership with Sunkist. These efforts are part of a multi-year value creation strategy intended to reduce overhead and improve operating leverage.
Scaling Avocado Production
Regarding future growth, the company is placing emphasis on its avocado segment. Management raised its fiscal 2027 production outlook to more than 10 million pounds of avocados. This expansion is supported by 400 acres of new plantings that were completed in 2023 and 2024, which the company expects will begin contributing to revenue as the trees reach maturity.
Market Context
The market reaction underscores the pressure on agricultural firms to demonstrate volume growth and disciplined expense management. For Limoneira, the ability to offset lower revenue with improved EBITDA is central to the investment thesis as the company attempts to navigate market fluctuations while transitioning toward a more diversified production mix.
