Kennametal CEO Sanjay Chowbey increased his equity stake in the industrial tool manufacturer by purchasing 7,000 shares of common stock on September 10, 2026. The transaction, valued at approximately $203,700, follows analyst scrutiny regarding supply chain cost pressures.
Chowbey acquired the shares at prices between $29.055 and $29.100. Following this purchase, the CEO’s total direct holdings reached 246,839.373 shares. This figure includes 540.35 shares held within the firm's 401(k) retirement plan, according to a regulatory filing.
"While Kennametal has benefited temporarily from passing costs to customers faster than they accrue, this situation has raised concerns about future margins," said Angel Castillo, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, in a recent research note.
Analyst Downgrades and Raw Material Volatility
The insider purchase arrives shortly after Morgan Stanley downgraded Kennametal from Equalweight to Underweight. The downgrade resulted from margin concerns stemming from the volatility of raw material prices, specifically tungsten. According to the analyst report, the cost of tungsten has surged 500% since August 2025. This creates difficulties for manufacturers reliant on the metal for industrial cutting tools and wear-resistant components.
The company has historically managed these cost spikes by adjusting customer pricing. Analysts are now questioning the sustainability of this strategy. The primary concern is whether Kennametal can continue to pass these elevated costs to its end-user base without impacting long-term demand or losing market share to competitors.
Impact on Stakeholders
For investors, the CEO's decision to increase his personal stake signals internal confidence in the firm's operational capacity. The market remains focused on the broader margin outlook. The tension between the company’s ability to manage current inflationary pressures and the potential for long-term margin erosion remains the central narrative for Kennametal's stock performance in the current fiscal year.
