Brazilian delivery company iFood is increasing its capital expenditure with a 24 billion reais ($4.66 billion) investment plan through March 2027. This represents a 41% increase over its previous cycle as the company seeks to strengthen its position against competitors.

This capital commitment, detailed in a recent report, follows a 17 billion reais investment in the prior period. The company intends to use this funding to increase its market share across Brazil.

"The 24 billion reais we announced represent growth of 41% compared to the investment announced last year, when it was 17 billion reais. This increase reinforces our long-term commitment to Brazil, where we were born and have been for 15 years. Every real invested drives the entire ecosystem: businesses sell more, delivery partners have more income opportunities, consumers gain in convenience and better services, and Brazilian technology advances," said Diego Barreto, CEO of iFood.

Strategic Investment Pillars

The investment strategy focuses on four operational areas:

  • Restaurant Operations: Improving the core platform to support merchant partners.
  • Category Expansion: Scaling beyond food delivery into pharmacies, pet shops, and supermarkets.
  • Proprietary Technology: Developing internal infrastructure to support platform growth.
  • Fintech Integration: Scaling the company's financial services unit, iFood Pago.

AI Development and Market Impact

A central component of the technological investment is the development of a 'Large Commerce Model' (LCM). According to a report by The Economic Times, this generative AI model is being built in collaboration with parent company Prosus. The system is designed to interpret purchase intent and increase the accuracy of consumer recommendations on the app.

For the Brazilian market, the investment highlights the move toward "super-app" models that integrate logistics, retail, and financial services. By expanding into non-restaurant categories and fintech, iFood aims to increase the frequency of user interactions while providing additional revenue streams for its delivery partners.
