Expedia Group is centering its two-year turnaround strategy on artificial intelligence to increase development speed and enhance traveler personalization. The company reports that AI integration is yielding measurable improvements in operational efficiency and data capture as it navigates competition in the travel industry.
"Because no one wants to expand margin massively, but then, in two years you hit a wall because you haven't made the investments that you need," said Ariane Gorin, CEO of Expedia Group, during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.
Operational Metrics and AI Implementation
Expedia is deploying AI across its consumer-facing interfaces and its internal development workflows. According to an Investing.com report, the company has seen efficiency gains following these implementations:
- Development Velocity: Engineering teams are working 40% faster after integrating AI into the software development lifecycle.
- Traveler Intent: Natural-language search tools are capturing 60% more information regarding user intent compared to previous search methods.
- Automated Support: The company's agentic voice support for Vrbo partners now successfully resolves 10% of incoming queries without human intervention.
Financial Position and Long-Term Investment
These operational shifts occur as Expedia maintains its financial profile. The company reports that its free cash flow has doubled on a trailing 12-month basis compared to two years ago, supported by gross profit margins that currently stand at 90%.
Management emphasizes that these margins are being balanced against the need for capital expenditure. By reinvesting in AI infrastructure now, the company aims to avoid the long-term stagnation that can follow short-term margin expansion strategies.
Enhancing the Traveler Experience
Expedia is focusing on the travel planning experience. The company intends to use its data repositories to provide relevant recommendations, shifting the focus from shortening the booking process to improving the quality of the planning phase.
"We have so much data that we can use to help a traveler make a better decision. By the way, people are happiest when they're planning, so it's not always about shortening the time to planning. It can be about how do you make planning delightful," said Gorin.
This approach signals a trend where travel platforms are attempting to differentiate themselves by acting as intelligent assistants rather than booking engines. For Expedia, the success of this strategy depends on the company's ability to maintain its current development speed while scaling AI tools across its portfolio of brands.
